Task 1: Site analysis

For task 1 for project 1 of Arch 1102 Architectural Design Studio 2 requires us to design a space suitable for architecture students to study and designing area. The site that has been assigned to us is located in a residential area of Woolloomooloo, surrounded by the densely populated suburbs of Sydney’s CBD, Darlinghurst, Potts Point and Kings Cross. The site is rectilinear in shape on the corner of Reid Avenue and Dowling Street. Near the site there are public and community facilities such as Old Fitzroy Pub and a nursery which is mostly surrounded by the residents.

The site as a whole has many level changes and many retaining walls. Along McElhone Street the site from north to south is on an ascending elevation. Zone B that’s along McElhone Street has a wall that is a descending elevation (around 0.78m to 0.22m) from north to south. On Reid Avenue from the top of zone B to bottom of Zone C has a descending elevation from east to west. Zone B on Reid avenue side has a wall height of 0.11m to 0.95m from east to west. There is another wall along Dowling Street of descending elevation of around 0.36m to 0.05m, south to north.

The Site that has been assigned to us composes of 4 zones, which are Zone, A, B, C and D. There are a lot of vegetation primary situated in zones B and C due to the fact that zone B is a communal garden with about 3 tress clumped together on the north end of zone B covering steps that lead from zone A to zone B. The garden is surrounded with a 2200mm high sandstone wall, faced with climbing vegetation, similar in character to the wall on the eastern side of McElhone Street. The zone that our design proposals must remain in is Zone C which has Zone B to the East of it which is the community garden.
